THE DENTIST

Dr. Ferit Çiftçi

Dr. Ferit Çiftçi, DDS, is a dentist working in Şanlıurfa. Smile design and composite veneers are a frequent part of his work, and in planning he considers the face, the teeth and the bite together. He is the clinic's only dentist; he carries out the examination, the planning and the treatment himself. He also writes clinical guides for dentists.

APPROACH

How treatment is planned

  1. Face, lip line and bite

A tooth's shape is not considered on its own; how much tooth the lips show at rest and when smiling, the proportions of the teeth to each other and to the face, and the bite are assessed together. The evidence that the so-called "golden proportion" is found in natural smiles is insufficient.[2]

  2. Natural tooth structure

Where appropriate, the aim is to preserve natural tooth structure. The extent of work needed is not the same for every tooth; where enamel is removed, the procedure is considered irreversible.

  3. Care as well as appearance

How a restoration will be cleaned and how it will work when chewing are part of the plan, just as much as how it will look.

How are composite veneers made?

A direct composite veneer is shaped by hand, on the tooth itself. The details vary with the tooth and the treatment plan.

  1. Suitability: Whether a composite veneer is a suitable option for that tooth is assessed together with the cause of any gap, tooth positions, existing fillings, gum health and the bite. Decay or gum disease, if present, is treated first.
  2. Shaping: The composite is bonded to the tooth, sculpted to build its shape and hardened with a special light.[1]
  3. Finishing and polishing: The surface is refined and polished.[1]
  4. Bite: If your bite does not feel comfortable after placement, tell your dentist.[1]
  5. Over the years: if needed, composite can be repaired[1]; whether to repair or replace depends on the condition of the tooth and the veneer, and on the cause, location and extent of the damage.

How is the choice between composite and ceramic made?

The decision is made at an examination, weighing the condition of the tooth, how much preparation is needed, the bite and the maintenance each option may require. The type of material and why it is chosen are explained to you before treatment. More: Ceramic veneers.
